How to make a photo zine from your phone photos

Pick eight phone photos with one clear subject each, arrange them as a short story with a strong cover and a quiet last page, add captions of under ten words, and print the zine on one sheet of A4 or Letter at 100% scale. Fold, cut the centre slit and you have an 8-page photo zine with A7 pages.

Pick eight photos, not eighty

A one-sheet zine has eight pages, and that limit is its strength. Start with a shortlist of 20 photos from one day, trip or theme, then cut to eight. Each panel is about 74 × 105 mm from A4, roughly a playing card, so choose photos with one clear subject and avoid wide shots full of tiny detail.

Mix shapes on purpose. Portrait phone photos fill a zine page naturally; keep two or three landscapes for the pages with a wider frame or a two-photo layout. Before you start, send the photos from your phone straight into the open project with the phone upload QR code in Foldpic's editor, so you do not have to email them to yourself.

Sequence them like a story

Think of the order as beginning, middle and end. The cover is the strongest single image, page 2 sets the scene (a place, a sign, the weather), pages 3–6 carry the moments, and page 7 is the quiet one: a detail, an empty table, the walk home. The back page holds a small photo and a sign-off.

Alternate close-ups with wider frames so the pages breathe, and keep two similar photos apart. If two pictures face each other across a fold, make them talk to each other: two people looking at each other, or the before and after of the same street.

Captions and type

Keep captions under ten words. A time and a place (“Sunday, 7.40 am, Porto”) does more than a sentence, and a small date stamp reads like the frame counter on a contact sheet. Use one quote page if someone said something that sums up the day.

Pick one style and stay with it. Film adds a warm cast and polaroid frames that make mixed phone photos look like one roll; Riso gives a two-colour independent-press look; Minimal lets strong photos speak. Mixed lighting from different phones blends much better under one consistent filter.

Fold, cut and make copies

Fold in half the long way, then in half and in half again so you see four panels, and unfold. Fold the long way again and cut the centre crease through the middle two panels only. Open it, push the ends together so the slit opens into a diamond, and flatten it into a booklet with the cover on top.

A zine is made to be handed out. Print five or ten copies in one run so the colours match, and give one to everyone who is in the photos.

Questions people ask

How many photos go in an 8-page zine?

Eight to twelve: one per page, plus two-photo or film-strip layouts on one or two pages.

What size is a zine printed on A4?

Each page is an eighth of the sheet: about 74 × 105 mm (A7). US Letter gives about 70 × 108 mm.

Do photos look good on plain paper?

Yes, at 100–120 gsm with clear, high-contrast photos. Glossy photo paper works too because the zine prints on one side.

How do I get photos from my phone into the zine?

Use the phone upload QR code in the editor: scan it, pick photos and they appear in the project on your computer.
