How to make the envelope

Five minutes, one sheet, a glue stick.

  1. 1. Choose the card size

Pick what goes inside (A6, A5, A7, 4×6, 4.25×5.5 or 5×7 inches, or a custom size) and your printer paper.

  2. 2. Download and print at 100%

Print the PDF at Actual size / 100%, never Fit to page, on 90–120 gsm paper or thin card.

  3. 3. Cut and fold

Cut on the solid outline. Fold the two side flaps in, then fold the bottom flap up over them.

  4. 4. Glue and close

Glue the bottom flap to the side flaps on the grey strips, slide the card in and fold the top flap down. Seal with glue or a sticker.

Making the card too? Every Foldpic project — folded cards, postcards, zines and photo books — has a gift kit that prints a matching envelope, gift tags and a paper sleeve in the same colours.

Envelope questions

What size envelope does an A6 card need?

A C6 envelope (114 × 162 mm) is the standard fit for an A6 card (105 × 148 mm). The template adds 4 mm plus a thickness allowance to the card on each side, so the A6 template comes out at about 154 × 111 mm, landscape.

Can I make an envelope from one A4 sheet?

Yes, for cards up to roughly A6 or 5 × 7 inches. Bigger cards need an A3 or 11 × 17 inch sheet; the tool tells you when a size will not fit and switches the template to the next paper size up.

What paper is best for a homemade envelope?

90–120 gsm paper folds crisply and still goes through a home printer; thin card up to 160 gsm works for a sturdier envelope. Score the fold lines with a ruler and an empty ballpoint pen on anything heavier than 120 gsm.

Can I post a homemade envelope?

Usually yes if it is a standard size, rectangular, sealed and the address is legible. Postal services set minimum sizes (for example 140 × 90 mm for Royal Mail letters), so very small envelopes may not be accepted — check your local postal service.

Is the template really free?

Yes. It is generated in your browser, there is no sign-up, and nothing is uploaded.
