Photo book at home vs Mixbook and Shutterfly: honest cost comparison

A 20-page softcover photo book costs from $14.99 at Mixbook and $24.98 at Shutterfly before per-page charges, and neither service will give you a PDF of your book. Printing a 16 to 32 page booklet at home costs a handful of sheets and ink, but you get a stapled softcover rather than a hardcover or layflat.

What you are comparing

Print-and-ship services and a home-printed booklet are different objects. Mixbook, Shutterfly and the others make hardcover, softcover and layflat books on heavy paper with a bound spine and post them to you; the trade is that your project lives in their editor and the only output is the physical book. A home booklet is stapled, A5 or half-Letter, on the paper you choose; the trade is that you do the folding, and the output is a PDF you own and can reprint.

The prices below are list prices captured in September 2026 and all of these services run near-permanent promotions, often 40 to 50 percent off, so the real price you pay is usually lower than list. The structure, a base price plus a per-page charge above the included pages, is what to watch.

The price table

Base prices for the smallest common softcover and hardcover, with the per-page add-on where the service publishes it. Home costs are marked typical, varies, because paper and ink prices differ by country and printer.

What the services do better

Be fair to them. A hardcover with a printed wrap, a layflat spread that opens flat across the gutter, 100-plus pages, and paper heavier than any home printer will feed: none of that is possible at home. Their editors also have deep template libraries and autofill; Mixbook's Story Mode generates three versions of a book from your answers, and Shutterfly offers a free designer service. If you want one heirloom album and do not own a printer, they are the right choice.

Their weaknesses, from their own review pages, are about control: no PDF, projects that live on their servers, editors that lose work, and pricing that depends on catching the right promotion. Those are exactly the things the home route fixes.

What home does better

Cost per copy is the obvious one: the second, third and tenth copy of a home booklet cost the same few sheets as the first, which matters for a family album that goes to three households. Speed is the other: from photos to a folded book in an evening, with no shipping. And ownership: the PDF is yours, so you can reprint in ten years or take it to a copy shop for heavier paper. Foldpic exports the print PDF without a watermark on the album pages, plus a reading PDF of the spreads for sharing on screen.

The realistic ceiling is a 32-page A5 softcover on 160 gsm paper, or an A4 booklet from A3 sheets if your printer takes them. For photo quality on a modern inkjet with matte photo paper, the result is close to a service's softcover; for the feel of a hardcover it is not the same thing.

A sensible way to use both

Many people do both: design and print at home first, because it is free and fast, then if the album deserves it, order one hardcover from a service for the shelf. The home version becomes the draft, the gift copies and the backup. Since Foldpic keeps the PDF, you are never locked into either route.

Questions people ask

Can I download my Mixbook or Shutterfly book as a PDF?

No. Mixbook's own FAQ says you cannot download your project as a PDF, and Shutterfly does not offer one either. The output is the printed book only.

Is a home-printed photo book cheaper?

Per copy, yes: a 16-page booklet is four sheets and some ink. You do not get a hardcover or layflat, and you need a printer.

Which is better for a wedding album?

For the one heirloom copy, a hardcover or layflat from a service. For parents' copies, drafts and a shelf accordion, home printing.

Does Foldpic print and ship?

No. Foldpic makes the PDF and the folding instructions; you print at home or at a copy shop.
