Photo gift ideas you can print at home: cards, strips, calendars, zines and albums

The quickest photo gifts to print at home are a folded photo card (1–3 photos, about 3 minutes), photo-booth strips or bookmarks (5 to a sheet) and an 8-page mini zine (one sheet, about 5 minutes). For a bigger present, a 12-month desk calendar or a 16-page stapled photo booklet takes 15 minutes to assemble.

Small and quick: cards, strips and bookmarks

A folded photo card is the fastest personal gift there is. It prints on one side of a single sheet, folds twice and holds one photo on the front and a second inside, with room for a proper message. It takes about three minutes from printer to finished card, works for birthdays, thank-yous and invitations, and needs only one to three photos.

Photo-booth strips and bookmarks print five to a sheet on one side, so glossy photo paper is fine. Strips suit friends and party guests: a burst of four photos of the same faces reads like a real booth session. Bookmarks suit readers, teachers and grandparents; punch the circle at the top and add a ribbon. Both are small enough to tuck inside a card or a book you are already giving.

One sheet, a whole story: the mini zine

An 8-page mini zine is printed on a single sheet, folded three times and cut once, with no staples. It holds about eight to ten photos and a few lines of text, which makes it ideal for a weekend away, a first year with a new pet or a birthday retrospective. It costs one sheet of paper and about five minutes.

Zines work best as a set of small moments rather than one perfect photo. Pick a theme, write short captions in your own words and hand it over in a matching envelope. Because it prints on one side, any home printer can make it.

A present that lasts: calendars and booklets

A mini desk calendar is twelve postcard-size month cards printed four to a sheet, each with its own photo and the dates filled in. Cut the three sheets into quarters, clip them together with a binder clip and it stands on a desk all year. It is the classic gift for grandparents: the best photo from each month of last year, on their desk for the whole of next year.

A stapled photo booklet holds 16 or more pages, printed double-sided and folded into a real little book. It suits weddings, a baby's first year or a big trip. Allow about 15 minutes to print, fold and staple, plus the time to choose photos.

Something to display: the accordion album

An accordion album is a strip of tall panels folded zig-zag. It stands open on a shelf like a tiny exhibition and folds flat to post. It prints on one side only, so glossy photo paper works well, and eight panels from two sheets is a comfortable size.

Accordions suit journeys and timelines: a road trip one stop per panel, or a family line from great-grandparents to the newest baby. Add card covers on the end panels and tie it with a ribbon.

Choosing by occasion and photo count

If you have one to three photos, make a card or a single bookmark. Four to eight photos suit photo strips, a set of postcards or a mini zine. Nine to sixteen photos fit an accordion album or a desk calendar, and anything above that is a stapled booklet. Foldpic's Help me choose page asks for the occasion and the number of photos and suggests a format and template.

Finish any of them with a matching envelope, a gift tag or a paper sleeve from Foldpic's gift kit, so a homemade print feels like a wrapped present rather than a sheet off the printer.

Questions people ask

What is the quickest photo gift to print at home?

A folded photo card: one sheet, two folds, about three minutes.

What photo gift suits grandparents?

A mini desk calendar with a photo for each month, or a photo booklet of the past year.

Can I print these on any home printer?

Yes. Cards, strips, zines, calendars and accordions print on one side; only booklets and postcards need double-sided printing, which can be done by hand if your printer lacks duplex.

What paper should I use for photo gifts?

160–250 gsm matte card for cards, calendars and bookmarks; glossy photo paper works for one-sided formats such as strips and accordions.
