A little more about this look

Wish You Were Here is a set of quieter postcards in the film style: off-white card, a warm 35 mm cast on the photos and typewriter-style captions. The picture sides alternate between a framed photo with a white polaroid border and a full-bleed image, with one card that puts two photos side by side. The first card has a special back with a small thumbnail photo in the corner, a good place for a second angle of the same view or a photo of the person writing.

The other backs keep the classic layout with a caption line, a message area, address lines and a stamp box. The warm filter pulls phone photos from different days and different light together into one set, which matters when four postcards sit side by side on someone's fridge. Choose photos with one clear subject; a postcard is small and busy scenes turn into texture.

One sheet gives four postcards, picture side on side A and the message and address side on side B, so print double-sided and flip on the short edge. With fewer than four designs the sheet repeats them, which is handy for sending the same view to several people. Use 200 to 300 gsm card so it survives the post, print at 100%, then cut once across and once down the middle on the tick marks. The set uses 6 photos across 4 postcards.

How you will assemble it

1Print both sides. Landscape, 100% scale, flip on the short edge.

2Check the backs line up. Hold the sheet to a window.

3Cut along the marks. The small ticks on the edges mark the cuts: one across the middle, one down the middle.

4Write, stamp, send. Most postal services accept home-made postcards on card of at least 200 gsm.
